Corten

steel with a protective patina

Corten is a special weather-resistant steel that develops a natural protective patina over time. Thanks to its distinctive appearance and long service life, it is an ideal choice for architecture, design, and technical structures.

Weathering steel

Corten forms a natural protective patina that protects the surface from corrosion without the need for coatings. Ideal for exterior use and design elements.

Wide range in stock

Sheets, pipes, and profiles in stock in the most commonly used thicknesses and formats. Activator and passivator also available.

Cutting and custom processing

We supply precise lengths, formats, and special parts to your requirements. Perforated and anti-slip sheets are also available.

Corten is a special type of steel that can withstand weather conditions on its own. The material looks like ordinary steel; it gains its appearance after corrosion processes start on its surface. Initially, the patina is orange, and over time it darkens to dark brown. Depending on the Corten grade, the patina colour varies, so it is not suitable to combine different grades, as the final colours will differ in shade.

The formation of a special patina prevents complete rust-through, so there is no need to use coatings or other anti-corrosion treatments. When Corten is exposed to weather conditions for several years, the surface develops a stable, distinctive, and very impressive rust patina that prevents further corrosion.
By adding copper to the steel and other elements such as Si (silicon), P (phosphorus) and Cr (chromium), two variants were introduced in practice – with nickel (Corten A) and without nickel (Corten B).

Corten A/S355J0WP – commonly known as “phosphorus steel” (P), an element that promotes enhanced protective oxidation and is used primarily for architectural applications.

Corten B/S355J2W+N – is used for structures exposed to intensive loading, and this special steel also withstands low temperatures.

Sheets are rolled:
– cold-rolled from 0.5 to 2 mm thickness
– hot-rolled from 1.5 to 20 mm thickness
– quarto plates from 15 mm thickness and above.
In coils, they are produced in thicknesses from 0.5 to 20 mm.

Main advantages of this steel:

  • The corrosion rate is much slower than with conventional steel
  • The self-protecting corroded layer protects the base steel, which does not lose its mechanical properties even after a long time
  • Copper-coloured patina that enhances the surface
  • The steel matures naturally under atmospheric influences
  • Mild steel with a C (carbon) content of less than 0.2% and 5–8% of other added elements
  • It is 100% recyclable

Supplied in widths of 1000, 1250, 1500 and 2000 mm (all grades are supplied in all widths).
Quarto plates can also be supplied in a width of 2500 mm.

Lengths can be 2000, 2500, 3000 and 6000 mm (standard sheet formats), or non-standard lengths on customer request. We offer this service to help you save on waste costs when cutting to the required dimensions!

Availability may vary depending on stock at service centres or commercial warehouses. Standard material thicknesses are mainly: 1–1.5–2–3–4–5–6–8–10–12–15 mm.

Working with Corten steel requires special welding electrodes or wires for this type of steel.

You will find these in our range, along with chemicals to accelerate oxidation or varnishes for coating the oxidised surface.

Corten steel is preferred for use by the sea, where steel material corrodes easily. Thanks to alloying additions such as phosphorus, copper, chromium, nickel, silicon, and molybdenum, Corten steel is 8–10 times more resistant than conventional steel. Corten steel is supplied in coils, strips, bars, round tubes, and profiles.

Corrosion resistance

The weather resistance of Corten steel gives it special characteristics.
It can be placed outdoors without any maintenance, so architectural and artistic elements such as sculptures, wall cladding, fencing, railings, garden furniture, aesthetic and functional garden elements (lawn dividers, tree stakes, vineyard posts, planters, fountains, and more) can be left outside without any intervention. Over 2–3 years, without using an accelerator, the patina stabilises and develops its final colour. All of this without the need for painting or further maintenance.
The steel does not need surface treatment because the oxidised Corten layer forms a film that prevents water and water vapour from entering the material. This prevents further oxidation of the material, and therefore no additional protection of the steel against weather conditions is required, such as galvanising or protective coating.

In the event of mechanical damage to Corten, do not worry—over time, the patina will form again on the damaged areas.

Surface corrosion forms on the material due to weather exposure, so for indoor use the material must be oxidised using chemicals.

For outdoor use, no accelerators are required; the protective layer will form on its own sooner or later depending on the specific weather conditions at the application site. During maturation, material left to corrode naturally without chemicals may develop different shades of patina. If the desired result is an approximately uniform colour, we recommend applying an oxidation accelerator (activator).

Surface varnishing (passivation) is entirely up to the customer and the desired final finish.
We recommend it only for indoor use and after the corroded layer has matured well, as varnishing too early on an insufficiently corroded layer may cause it to peel off together with the varnish.

Welding supplies and other products for Corten:

  • special discs, made from a polyamide blend for removing zinc crystals (mill scale) from steel. These discs completely clean mill scale from black carbon steel while preserving 100% of the base steel. In this way, the mechanical properties of the steel remain unaffected, with a perfect surface finish for uniform oxidation. Disc diameter is 125 mm.
  • electrodes and welding wires – the special ESAB electrode for Corten has a moisture-resistant coating on the surface, LMA alloyed with Ni and Cu. It is suitable for welding weather-resistant steels (Cor-Ten®) and for shipbuilding. This electrode can be used for all joint types and welding positions.
  • rust activator – an oxidising solution of water-soluble mineral salts to accelerate the rusting process on iron and steel surfaces of Corten steel.
  • passivator – protective varnish – a transparent varnish that protects the steel surface from undesirable effects. It forms a film on highly acidic surfaces that prevents subsequent oxidation and yellowing. It provides chemical protection and minimises subsequent oxidation, creating a protective barrier that withstands weather conditions.
