Aluminum profiles are suitable for a wide range of applications – from aircraft components to conservatories. They are resistant to corrosion and weathering and have almost unlimited formability, which explains their growing popularity for various uses.
Aluminum profiles are produced by extrusion. The aluminum blank (starting material) must first be heated to a forming temperature of approximately 500 °C, then pressed through a die, which determines the final external shape of the profile. The manufactured aluminum profile must then be cut to the desired length and finally allowed to cool and harden.
After the extrusion process, surface treatment is performed, with anodizing being one option. This method imparts desired surface properties, such as a specific color or hardness, through electrolytic oxidation.
Another option is powder coating, where the oxide layer is first removed, and the profile is then sanded to slightly roughen the surface for the coating itself. Next, colored powder is electrostatically charged and applied to the profile using a powder gun. The coating is baked at temperatures between 140 and 200 °C. Powder coating creates various colors and surface effects – for example, matte, glossy, or metallic.
